2nd Annual First Responder 3-Gun Competition

The Competition
Free Range Ministries hosted the 2nd Annual First Responder 3-Gun Competition for first responders in Marshall County on October 29, 2022 at the Barn at Free Range Farm.
The competition was made up of 42 shooters on 14 teams of 3 competitors. The teams were from: Boaz Police Department, Albertville Police Department, Albertville Fire Department, Guntersville Police Department, Arab Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Marshall EMS, Douglas Police Department, and Douglas Fire Department. Each shooter competed in 3 stages using pistol, rifle, and shotgun. To break the tie for the Individual High Score, shooters competed head to head on a dueling tree using a pistol.
Pistol Stage
Mike Oram, Chief RSO and owner of Jensen Rock Outfitters, ran the pistol stage. Shooters began the stage with 10 rounds of 9mm and engaged 8 targets with a 30 second time limit to complete the stage. There were 4 paper targets between 7 and 10 yards. These targets were scored 3, 4, or 5 points based on shot placement. There were 4 steel targets: 6” at 10 yards worth 2 points, 6” at 15 yards worth 2 points, 8” at 20 yards worth 3 points, and 8” at 25 yards worth 4 points. Two points were acquired for each round remaining after hitting all targets. A total of 35 points were possible at this stage.
Luis Guzman with Boaz Police Department and Dustin Bailey with Marshall County EMS each shot a perfect score of 35 on this stage.
Rifle Stage
James Mills, Chief RSO and owner of The Ranch, ran the rifle stage. Shooters began the stage with 10 rounds of .223 and engaged 8 targets with a 45 second time limit to complete the stage. There were 4 paper targets between 35 and 45 yards. These targets were scored 3, 4, or 5 points based on shot placement. There were 4 steel targets: 6” at 100 yards worth 2 points, 8” at 150 yards worth 2 points, 10” at 200 yards worth 3 points, and 12” at 250 yards worth 4 points. Two points were acquired for each round remaining after hitting all targets. A total of 35 points were possible at this stage.
John Amos with Albertville Police Department shot a perfect score of 35 on this stage.
Shotgun Stage
Jason Jackson, owner of Bright Star Sporting Clays, set up the sporting clays and ran the shotgun stage. Shooters began the stage with 10 rounds of 12 gauge and engage 10 clay targets thrown from 3 locations. The clays were thrown in 5 sets of doubles with each clay hit being worth 3 points. A total of 30 points were possible at this stage.
Dueling Tree Tiebreaker
Each shooter began with 10 rounds of 9mm. Two shooters competed head to head shooting the paddles on their side of the tree, flipping them to the opposing side. If a shooter flipped all six paddles at one time to the opposing side they won immediately or after the shooters had fired all 10 rounds, the shooter with the fewer number of paddles on their side won.
Brooks Robertson with Arab Police Department, Joshua Willis with Arab Police Department and Chance Colvin with Albertville Police Department were tied for individual high score and competed head to head on the dueling tree.
Lunch
Competitors and Volunteers were served a barbecue lunch. Chad Pell with Pell Rubber smoked the barbecue and Santa Fe restaurant provided the sides for lunch.
Awards
The awards were cerakoted by James Mills and laser engraved by Chris Duckett. They were presented to the team and individual with the highest score.
